The Oakland Symphony has long been a pillar of artistic excellence and community engagement in the Bay Area, and with the appointment of Kedrick Armstrong as its new Music Director, an exciting new chapter is unfolding. We caught up with Kedrick in downtown Oakland as he made his way to rehearsal, diving into his vision for the Symphony and the city he now calls home.

Originally from Georgetown, SC, Kedrick Armstrong is making history as the Oakland Symphony’s 9th Music Director, bringing fresh energy to the nearly century-old institution. At just 30 years old, he follows in the footsteps of influential leaders like Michael Morgan, who shaped the orchestra for three decades, as well as past directors Orley See, Harold Farberman, and Calvin Simmons—the Symphony’s first African American Music Director. Now, Kedrick is ready to carry that legacy forward while redefining what a symphony can be in the East Bay.
For Kedrick, leading the Symphony isn’t just about the music—it’s about being part of Oakland’s cultural heartbeat. He’s intentionally made his home in the city, immersing himself in its sounds, stories, and rhythms to ensure the orchestra reflects its community.
"I want to get inside the community and figure out what other stories need to be told," said Kedrick. "What other cultures have yet to be represented on the symphonic stage? And how do we take that message—not just tell it in Oakland, but share it internationally!"
Kedrick Armstrong is a dynamic conductor whose career spans opera, symphony, and education. He recently made his debut at Lyric Opera of Chicago with The Factotum and has worked with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Chicago Opera Theater, and DePaul Opera Theater.
Beyond the podium, he has been deeply involved in arts education, mentoring young musicians through initiatives with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Ravinia Festival, and Chicago Sinfonietta. A graduate of Wheaton College and the University of Colorado-Boulder, he has studied with esteemed conductors including Mei-Ann Chen and the late Michael Morgan.
One of our favorite moments of our time together was going backstage at the Paramount Theatre, the Symphony’s home. Built in 1931, this Art Deco landmark was once the largest multi-purpose venue on the West Coast. The backstage walls are adorned with photographs of legendary artists, musicians, and performers who have left their mark on this historic space.
One portrait stood out to both of us—the late Michael Morgan, who led the Oakland Symphony for 30 years and was a guiding force in its commitment to diversity and community engagement. Kedrick had the privilege of studying under Morgan, and now, he’s stepping into the role with a deep respect for that legacy, ready to forge new paths while honoring the past.
Kedrick isn’t here to simply uphold tradition—he’s here to listen, elevate the voices of the community, and reimagine how we experience classical music. By drawing inspiration from a wide range of genres, he’s bringing fresh ideas to the stage and reshaping what a symphony can be.
"We relate to our audiences through what they know," said Kedrick. "I listen to so many kinds of music—jazz, hip-hop, funk, gospel—you name it! And the orchestra shows up in so many different ways. So how can I pair Mozart alongside Tupac or Beethoven alongside Beyoncé and truly honor the traditions, cultures, and musicianship behind all those perspectives? Oakland wants that—they demand that from the orchestra. And having people hold you to that standard? That’s what makes this job so exciting."
The Oakland Symphony was drawn to Kedrick’s insatiable curiosity and passion for music in all its forms. Even early in his career, his projects, collaborations, and performances have already left a lasting impact, each reflecting his dedication to amplifying underrepresented voices. Wherever he goes, he brings an undeniable energy, inspiring musicians, singers, and audiences alike with his openness, presence, and commitment to community and music education.
"He could probably fill 365 days of concert programming," said Dr. Mieko Hatano, Chief Executive Officer of the Oakland Symphony. "He started when he was very young, so giving him this stage to do that has been wild. Every one of us on staff, management, and committees is always so compelled by his different ideas. He also likes to hear other ideas. He's the ultimate facilitator of collaboration and conversation."
Now, it’s your turn to experience this exciting new chapter for the Oakland Symphony. See how Kedrick Armstrong is shaping the future of classical music, bringing fresh perspectives to the stage while honoring the Symphony’s rich legacy.
