Juan Atkins, also known as “The Originator,” is a pioneering figure in the world of electronic music. A native of Detroit, Michigan, he is widely considered to be one of the founders of the genre known as techno.

Atkins began his musical career in the early 1980s as a member of the group Cybotron. Alongside his Cybotron bandmate Richard “3070" Davis, Atkins helped to develop and popularize the distinctive sound of techno music. They released several influential tracks such as “Clear” and “Alleys of Your Mind” which helped lay the foundation for the techno genre.

Atkins is known for being an early adopter of technology in music. He started using the Roland TR-808 drum machine and the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer to create his sounds. His use of these instruments helped to define the sound of techno and influenced countless other electronic musicians in the years that followed.

In addition to his work as a musician, Atkins is also known for his contributions to the Detroit techno scene. He founded the record label Metroplex in 1985, which helped to promote and distribute the music of other Detroit-based techno artists.

Atkins is also known for his role in mentoring and inspiring other techno musicians. He has been credited with helping to launch the careers of many prominent techno artists, including Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, and Carl Craig.

Juan Atkins is a true pioneer of electronic music and techno, and his contributions to the genre have had a profound and lasting impact. His innovative use of technology, his distinctive sound, and his role as a mentor and inspiration to other musicians have all helped to shape the world of techno as we know it today.

If you are a fan of electronic music and techno, then Juan Atkins is definitely an artist worth checking out who will be featured at Mercury Soul’s Juan Atkins Techno Symphonic on Friday, January 27th at Public Works! His pioneering work continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world, and his legacy will be felt for generations to come.
