On March 14, San Francisco’s arts and philanthropy communities gathered at The Ritz Carlton San Francisco for an evening that embodied everything we believe in at Red Curtain Addict: access, artistry, and the power of live performance to shape lives.
The Community Music Center’s annual Spring Gala was more than a beautiful night out. It was a reminder of what’s possible when a city comes together to invest in its creative future.
From the moment guests stepped into the reception, there was a sense of shared purpose. Conversations flowed between artists, donors, and cultural leaders, all united by a belief that music education should be accessible to everyone. As the evening moved into the ballroom, that energy transformed into a program that seamlessly blended live performance, storytelling, and impact.
At the center of it all was the music.
Performances throughout the evening, including the vibrant sounds of Mariachi CMC, Children's Chorus, and more, brought the mission of Community Music Center to life in real time.
These weren’t simply moments of entertainment. They were living proof of what happens when people are given the opportunity to learn, create, and share their voice. These students are able to grow and develop real musical ability thanks to the support that makes lessons accessible through discounted tuition and free programs at CMC.
The evening was guided by our very own CEO and Founder, Kari Lincks Coomans, who served as emcee. Taking the stage in a room filled with supporters and artists, Kari reflected on the personal significance of the night:
“I’m deeply honored to have been a part of this evening. Music education has played a transformative role in my life. When I was growing up, generous support from members of my community allowed me to rent an oboe from my school. What may have seemed like a small gesture to someone else opened an entirely new world for me. To stand in a room filled with people who are making that same impact possible for others, it’s something I won’t forget.”
That sentiment echoed throughout the program, especially as the Community Music Center honored Ronald Gallman, along with Sharon L. Litsky and John F. Sampson, for their dedication to expanding access to music education. Their leadership and the generosity of everyone in the room support an organization that has been a cornerstone of San Francisco’s cultural fabric for over a century.
What makes Community Music Center stand apart is its unwavering commitment to accessibility. Through tuition assistance, community partnerships, and programs designed for students of all ages and backgrounds, CMC ensures that music is not a privilege. It is a possibility for anyone willing to explore it. And that impact is tangible.
Community Music Center provides more than $3M dollars in tuition assistance to over 3,600 students studying at both the Mission District branch and the Richmond District branch.
You could feel it in every performance, in every story shared, and in the collective understanding that this work shapes not just individual lives, but the cultural future of the city itself.
As the evening transitioned into dancing and celebration with music performed by Le Jazz Hot Quartet, the room held onto that sense of connection. This was not just a gala. It was a gathering of people who believe in opening doors, amplifying voices, and making space for the next generation of artists.
At Red Curtain Addict, we are always looking for the moments where art and community intersect in meaningful ways. This was one of them.
If you are inspired to support an organization that is actively expanding access to music education, or if you are curious to learn more about their programs, we invite you to explore Community Music Center.
