Van Anh Vo: From Vietnamese Masters to Blood Moon Orchestra

Streaming Dates: Available through the end of May 2021

Stanford LIVE has been delivering beautifully moving short films about artists over the past year, and this month they are featuring Emmy Award-winning composer Van Anh Vo! Vo is one of Vietnam's most celebrated traditional artists and integrates her musical heritage with the contemporary influences she takes from her Bay Area surroundings. Since settling in San Francisco in 2001, she has collaborated with musicians across different genres to create new works, bringing Vietnamese traditional music to a wider audience.

Addict Insider: Described as a 'fearless musical explorer,' Vo's works fuse her Vietnamese musical training with contemporary composition. Her works incorporate traditional instruments (like the 16-string dan tranh!) to create something completely unique! She has presented her music at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and Houston Grand Opera, in addition to collaborating with celebrated performers like Yo-Yo Ma and The Kronos Quartet.

Click here for more information. You can also explore more from Vo in this conversation for the Asian Art Museum on May 25 at 6:30pm PT!

Live Concert

Our Time is Now

Performance Date: Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at 8:00 pm

For our Red Curtain Addicts in New York, you can visit Lincoln Center for the one-night-only performance of "Our Time is Now!" This specially commissioned program - curated by superstar violinist Jennifer Koh - is meant to reflect on the disruption the pandemic has inflicted on the recording and live performance world. Koh's response was to create an hour-long concert that addresses the shared response of creative excellence in the face of adversity by both the AAPI and Black communities in New York City.

Addict Insider: Jennifer Koh is renowned for her performances of works spanning the centuries from traditional to contemporary! Hailed by the New York Times as "a star... by any measure," she is a regular performer with orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic. Koh is a unique performer in her efforts to amplify marginalized voices and artists, and her efforts to champion up-and-coming composers and their works!

Dance

"with cinder, ash to ember"

Performance Dates: Now Streaming

"with cinder, ash to ember" is a groundbreaking choreographic work by Jory Horn, Yi-Ting (Gama) Hsu and Hien Huynh inspired by their relationships with their mothers. The segments of the performance focus on "reincarnation, rebirth and the transmigration of refugees; the bond between mother and child separated by distance; and the merging of embodied memories and imprinted experiences with unspoken and recovered history". Using innovative and traditional movement techniques, this performance will open your eyes to the important differences and moving similarities in motherhood relationships - and remind you to call your mom after the show!

Addict Insider: This incredible performance makes poetry out of the movement and tells a story that will make you unable to take your eyes off the screen! The three young dancers and choreographers who created this work use techniques of modern dance and traditional Cambodian movement to reach their audience. The expression of each segment is told through dance, spoken word, and song to create something truly riveting.
