Northeastern State University’s new Director of Jazz Studies Jordan VanHemert is performing for the first time in Oklahoma alongside his quartet on Thursday, September 14. The group, which includes Oklahoma favorites Scott McQuade (piano), Oklahoma State University professor Glenn Dewey (bass), and Steve Pruitt (drums), will play modern, straight-ahead jazz. Hailed by noted jazz critic Scott Yanow as a "skilled modern improvisor with a sound all his own", VanHemert's music pays homage to his Korean roots and his love for lyrical melodicism of the jazz tradition while driving forward toward the future of the art form. With its rhythmic, powerful, graceful, and captivating style, Reflejos Flamencos is putting on a memorable performance on Saturday, September 2nd! The audience will enjoy a collection of pieces ranging from traditional flamenco forms to modern pieces influenced by jazz and classical music. Reflejos Flamencos shares Spanish music and dance with Tulsa. The group started twenty years ago as a father-daughter duo showcasing flamenco guitar and dance by Johnny Beard and daughter Lexi Allen.
