When it comes to trailblazers Florence Price steps right up to the front of the line. She was the first African American woman to have an orchestral piece played by a major US orchestra. The Chicago Symphony first performed her First Symphony in 1933 at the World’s Fair in Chicago. George Gershwin is THE iconic American composer. Not only was he a commercial success on Broadway, but his requirement that his opera, Porgy and Bess, was to always be performed by African American singers was revolutionary in 1935 when it was first performed. This concert allows us to celebrate in our own small way the successes of these musical giants.
