Experience world-class theatre with Wicked, the hugely popular musical that tells the incredible untold story of the Witches of Oz, now celebrating fourteen spellbinding years in the West End.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Gregory Maguire that re-imagined the stories and characters created by L Frank Baum in The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students: the blonde, popular Glinda, and the misunderstood, shy, green Elphaba.
When the two encounter the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their fortunes see them embark on very different paths, and their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
When composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz discovered Maguire’s novel on holiday in 1995, plans for a live-action feature film were soon diverted, and the rights to the story released by Universal Pictures, paving the way for Schwartz to adapt Wicked into a musical, featuring iconic numbers such as Defying Gravity, For Good, The Wizard And I and, of course, No One Mourns The Wicked. Its Broadway premiere took place in October 2003, and it transferred to the West End’s Apollo Victoria Theatre in September 2006, going on to become a global phenomenon.
A two-time winner of the Olivier Audience Award, Wicked is now the 9th longest running musical in West End history. Having been seen by over 55 million people in more than 130 cities in 16 countries worldwide, including more than 10 million people in London alone, it’s safe to say the show is a true modern West End classic.
