We can hardly believe that fall is officially here! October is one of our favorite months in San Francisco because the weather is JUST riiiight and the music scene is packed with so many new concerts to discover. From world premieres to spooky Halloween events, we think you're going to like what we've selected in our Top Concert Picks for October. Scroll below to see more...!

October 3rd - 30th: Tosca, San Francisco Opera

Since its world premiere in 1900, Tosca continues to be one of the famous operas around the world. But why? Among many reasons, this opera's popularity has been driven by the operatic divas that played the leading role of Floria Tosca. From Hariclea Darclee (the famous soprano that debut the role) to Maria Jeritza (that famously sang one the iconic arias while lying on the floor after falling on stage - click here to read more) to Maria Callas (that was pretty much the opera QUEEN of the 20th century), these iconic women (along with a ton of others!) have influenced audiences to see the opera countless times.

But this time, the spotlight is shining on another leading lady that stands behind the curtain. The San Francisco Opera is presenting a new production of Tosca that has been spearheaded by the amazing female Director, Shawna Lucey! Even in 2018, a female Director is very uncommon so it's gratifying to see San Francisco Opera equalize the leadership opportunities and empower those with talent, regardless of their gender.

October 5th - 14th: World Premiere with Kronos Quartet, Alonzo King Lines Ballet

To celebrate LINES's 35th Anniversary and Kronos's 45th Anniversary, the two groups have paired up (for the first time!) to produce a World Premiere performance that will forever change the way you perceive and experience ballet and classical music while adding a local flair!

Since 1983, LINES performances are always doing a collaboration with noted composers, musicians, and visual artists from around the world. Alonzo King takes one type of art and combines it with another--creating an experience that forever changes our perception of each type of artwork.

This performance will open your mind to something entirely different. Something beyond beauty --that which reaches a level beyond emotions and reason. Alonzo King likes to say that the goal of ballet isn't to look pretty but to reach for transcendence.

October 9 - November 4th: Miss Saigon, SHN

Miss Saigon is a love story about "the ultimate sacrifice" - Where a mother has to say goodbye to her child as the child boardes a plane in Vietnam to head to America for a chance at a better life. The musical was inspired by a photograph, which Schonberg found inadvertently in a magazine. It showed a Vietnamese mother leaving her child at a departure gate to board an airplane headed for the United States where her father, an ex-GI, would be in a position to provide a much better life for the child.

Although the musical premiered in 1989 the new production now touring to San Francisco speaks directly to the current times and will leave you in complete awe!

October 27th: Hunchback of Notre Dame at Grace Cathedral, SFJAZZ

Grace Cathedral is a hotspot for cultural events and performances. In fact, they do all kinds of gatherings, from yoga on Tuesday nights, to once in a lifetime experiences like Hunchback of Notre Dame.

On Sat Oct 27th when everyone is out to celebrate Halloween, this sacred space of Grace Cathedral will transform into a grand movie palace for a special screening of director Wallace Worsley's immortal 1923 silent film adaptation of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Immerse yourself into the hallowed halls of Grace Cathedral with this unforgettable event featuring a live score performed on Grace's famous pipe organ by renowned organist and composer Dorothy Papadakos, accompanied by percussionist Elizabeth Hall.

October 28th: Chamber Music Concert at the Legion and Honor Museum, SF Symphony

What's better than seeing music surrounded by art?

The Legion of Honor is a Bay Area staple experience, housing artwork that spans over four Millenia, pair that with members of the San Francisco Symphony and you are in for a treat! On Oct 28th they will be opening their doors for a unique concert experience featuring musicians from the San Francisco Symphony who will play three works by Beethoven, including:

Sonata No. 4 in C major for Cello and Piano, Op. 102 No. 1 (featuring Associate Principal Cellist, Peter Wyrick)

Tickets include admission to the entire museum so you can check out some of their current exhibits before or after the concert!
