Sneak Peek: SF Ballet's NEW Costumes for The Sleeping Beauty

November 17, 2017

San Francisco Ballet is opening their 2017-2018 Repertory Season in January with a magical story ballet, The Sleeping Beauty! Did you know that when you listen to Disney Princess Aurora (or Lana Del Rey!) sing "Once Upon a Dream", you are actually listening to a piece based on one of Tchaikovsky's most famous waltzes composed for a three-act ballet?

The music is going to be dreamy, the dancing is going to be hypnotizing but what puts the cherry on top are the opulent costumes!

Lucky for us, we got a sneak peek of the new costumes at a special event at Charles Ferguson and Kay Dryden's house in Pacific Heights. This generous couple has continuously supported the SF Ballet and San Francisco arts scene in a big way, including this private cocktail reception.

Not only did we get an exclusive look at the costumes, we met amazing people who have put their heart and soul into the success of San Francisco Ballet. We ate delicious bites (created by chef Charles Phan from Slanted Door) with other supporters and patrons, toasted a glass of champagne with the Head of Men's Wardrobe, George Elvin (who has been there for over 40 years!) and swooned over the costumes with Fashion Designer Yuka Uehara and Principal Dancer Mathilde Froustey!

The whole room was filled with excitement for the new season! Soloist Wanting Zhao and Principal Dancer Jennifer Stahl told us all about the characters and the fun parts to look out for in this ballet and Laura Clifford, who benevolently made it possible for the SF Ballet to have these stunning designs, shared some amazing stories about the origins of the costumes!

We even got to chat with Executive Director Glenn McCoy and General Manager Debra Bernard. They had nothing but great things to say about what's ahead for the ballet, including their anticipation for Unbound: A Festival of New Works that will feature twelve world premiers by the most innovative artists from around the world!

To see more of the costumes, you'll just have to come see them for yourself at San Francisco Ballet! The Sleeping Beauty will be on stage from January 23 - February 4, 2017. This unique experience could be the perfect gift for your loved one or an A+ date idea just before Valentine's Day.
