3 Reasons Why The Velveteen Rabbit is a MUST-SEE This Holiday Season!

November 6, 2018
Nothing says holidays more than a little imagination and bringing the joy of live performances to as many children as possible! And, that is why we are excited to share our top 3 reasons you have to add The Velveteen Rabbit to your Holiday performance schedule! But first, a bit about the company who brings this magical experience to life!

ODC is a contemporary dance and arts organization founded in 1971 by current artistic director Brenda Way. Their programs involve 6,000 artists and students. They produce 150 performances annually including The Velveteen Rabbit which is now in its 32nd year! The Velveteen Rabbit is ideal for families with children from ages 3+ and we really recommend this performance for all ages, as it will really light up the inner-child in all of us this Holiday Season (Nov. 24 - Dec. 9, 2018)!

Scroll down to read more about the story and our top 3 reasons why ODC'sThe Velveteen Rabbit is a MUST-SEE!

About the Story:

Similar to Babes in Toyland, where toys come to life, The Velveteen Rabbit is a tale about love, loyalty, and hope. This story about a stuffed rabbit and a boy who endure much together but triumph through it all due to their love for one another. Told from the perspective of the rabbit who wants nothing more to become real. It is based on a British children's book that was first written in 1922 by Margery Williams Bianco who received several awards and was recognized by the National Education Association who named the book one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children." The Velveteen Rabbit's message is a classic, that we know your kids and family are going to love!

About the Performance:

This production has performed in front of over 200,000 people around the country by world-renowned ODC Dancers who are known for their athleticism and passion. Choreographed and directed by KT Nelson ODC Dancers will be accompanied by recorded narration by Geoff Hoyle, costumes by Brian Wildsmith, visuals by Dave Robertson and Sara Horner, and a musical score by Benjamin Britten with songs by Gina Leishman and Bob Franke sung by Rinde Eckert.

ODC dancers play many roles to help bring this story to life. They embody characters as unusual as a crocodile, a pack of real rabbits, and a 10-foot tall Nana! The cast has is comprised of many generations and features ten young dancers from ODC's youth programs, who audition for the chance to perform in this production alongside the company's professional dancers.

1) HOLIDAY SKATING WITH THE VELVETEEN RABBIT

For the first time this year, ODC/Dance will host a special precursor event leading up to the performances where characters from The Velveteen Rabbit will be at the Holiday Ice Rink at Embarcadero Center on Saturday, November 17 from 12-4pm, for an afternoon of ice skating, a meet and greet, photo opportunities and a chance to cuddle some cute real-life bunnies from SaveABunny, a Bay Area non-profit that shelters and treats neglected rabbits. It is the perfect combo for two days of family fun (a day skating and cuddling some bunnies, plus tickets to see the show)!

2) Spreading the Holiday Cheer!

ODC's Buddies for Bunnies program, now in its thirteenth year, aims to bring the joy of live performance to school children who otherwise wouldn't have access. ODC dedicates two The Velveteen Rabbit performances and over 1,000 tickets to underserved public schools (over 15 schools in the Bay Area will benefit this year). You can be a part of the charitable act and help ODC/Dance give the gift of live theater to schoolchildren who otherwise wouldn't have access.
