Unbound: SF Ballet's Contribution to New Works

April 11, 2018

There's something special about looking back on choreographers, dancers and composers of the past that created timeless classics and truly paved the way for dancers and musicians around the world. But then again, there's also something so refreshing and empowering to see works that are created within our own era.

This year, the San Francisco Ballet is presenting Unbound, a 17-day dance festival, that will showcase 12 world premieres featuring 12 current choreographers from around the world. They are also premiering several new pieces of music! "This unique festival will offer a glimpse at the future of our art form and I'm very much looking forward to it," said SF Ballet Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson.

When a choreographer is creating a new work, the dancers are often able to collaborate with them and can have a great impact on the final product. "You can only prepare so much beforehand because everything mostly happens in real-time with the dancers," said Choreographer, Myles Thatcher (seen above). "I love working with the dancers here at SF Ballet because they are so open and willing to try new things with me!"

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Max Cauthorn (SF Ballet Soloist) and Anita Paciotti (Ballet Master) at KFOG with Mike "No Name" Nelson to find out more about this unique and significant dance festival.

"It's not the first time Helgi (Tomasson, Ballet Artistic Director & Principal Choreographer) has done a festival," said Anita. But... this is his most ambitious undertaking devoted to new works. We are a classical company, but he has always maintained that that is not enough. You have to look to the future to where ballet will go from here."

Did you know that during the repertory season, the dancers practice six days a week from 10 am - 11 pm?? You're not going to believe what else we discovered...
