A San Francisco Concert Series Worth Checking Out

January 11, 2018

LIEDER ALIVE!: Celebrating New Works and Timeless Classics

One of the things we love most about San Francisco is the variety of music communities that are represented in our 7x7 city. From big to small, modern to classical, you can discover new genres and celebrate your favorites with a network of people that share the same interests. There so many that you might not even realize a specific niche or musical group exists. This year, our New Years Resolution is to explore this "Candyland of Music" and share what we unveil along the way.

We recently discovered a music organization called LIEDER ALIVE! that presents concerts in the Bay Area focused on rich and lyrical German art songs, also known as "lieder". This type of music was developed during the Romanticism of the nineteenth century and has continued to be a dynamic art form in the 21st century. These pieces are best known for their intense and emotional narratives that define a character's internal turmoil or passionate desire. (A good comparison would be Adele or Billy Holiday's music but in German - so much feeling and passion!).

LIEDER ALIVE! caught our attention because of their variety of concerts that feature both old and new lieder. They've presented works by some of our favorites, such as Mahler, Schubert, and Strauss along with new works performed by professional musicians in the Bay Area and beyond.

Director, Maxine Bernstein started LIEDER ALIVE! over 10 years ago with a mission to keep this art form thriving in our era, hence LIEDER ALIVE!. Along with their concert series, they frequently commission original works to share with our community and host monthly classes that give singers the opportunity to learn more about performing this unique genre.

They also support new and upcoming composers by providing a platform to premiere their music, contributing artists to perform them, and professional recording services to document them. "...if we truly want to keep Lieder "alive," it is essential that the outstanding composers of our time have the opportunity to contribute to the canon with their own vital new work," says Bernstein. We couldn't agree more!

Give it a try!

On Sunday, January 14, 2018, LIEDER ALIVE! will be presenting a special program called "Neue und Alte Liederfest" (AKA: "New and Old Songs"), featuring soprano Heidi Moss Erickson, their Composer-in-Residence Kurt Erickson, American composers, Mark Carlson and Luna Pearl Wolf along with their Artist-in-Residence mezzo-soprano Kindra Scharich and pianist Ronny Michael Greenberg.

About the Program...

Throughout the concert, we're going to hear a variety of songs (both new and old) with interesting combinations based on significant works. For instance, after hearing a performance of Richard Strauss' Dream in the Twilight (AKA: Traum durch die Dammerung), we're going to hear Luna Pearl Wolf's new work that was written in response to Strauss' piece. Afterwards, a work by Max Reger will be performed that takes Strauss' original words and sets them to a new melody. All three will be performed by soprano Heidi Moss Erickson. Pretty cool, huh?

Below is the full program:
